General

Generally it could take 7 to 14 days. But this will depend on the applicant i.e. your time commitments, ability to complete the competencies and if required to complete Continued Personal Development (CPD) training.
Contact will be made should any additional information be needed, which may cause a delay in the assessment process.
What do you mean by competence?
Competence Assessment:

BUT always remember, competency is not a PASS or FAIL exercise there are no grey areas..........you are either competent or not competent.
I have only ever worked as a Government Employee although much of my work involved internal consultancy. Would this make certification difficult?
Certification will be possible as well as meeting the entry criteria.
The guidelines as described in the question "what do you mean by competency" lists the areas which are examined during the process of certification.
I have only ever worked for large consultancies where none of the clients were classified as SMEs. Would this make certification difficult?
Certification will be possible in this case as the process accommodates a wide range of business experience.
The 6 competencies relate to personal competencies and not on the size of businesses one has dealt with in the course of delivering your consultation services.
Most of my carer has involved work with SMEs in developing countries. Would this be seen as inappropriate experience for work in developed countries?
In short the answer is NO. This would not be a disadvantage in the SME sector, as the issues which they face are similar globally.
The only real difference would be the cultural differences. The verbal and non-verbal communication practices and business methods which are key elements of competence would essentially be the same.
One would have to accommdate the language issues while delivering your consulting services.
In such cases one may be better suited to applying for international certification.
Most of my career has involved international assignments with organisations like The World Bank, Asian Development Bank and the UN. However, the projects were at a macro level and I had little interaction with the recipients of funds or technology. Would this make cerification difficult?
No it would not, as the certification process is based on personal competency.
Personal competency skills are examined and if you can demonstrate that you have all 6 competencies there is no reason why you should not be able to gain certification.
In such a case you may be better suited to applying for international certification .
My Knowledge of business accounting is limited. Will this prevent me from becoming a certified consultant?
Not at all. Businenss accounting is covered within the scope of the competencies. However, there are six core elements which cover a wide range of business activities. Should any one individual have difficulty with these there is always scope for completing further education (CPD) and completing the subject once you feel confortable. In such cases this should be discussed with your facilitatorHaving high levels of specific subject knowledge will not exclude an applicant from certification.
The certification process is based on 6 personal competencies, and these need to be clearly demonstrated ,and found to be satisfactory by the facilitators prior to certification.

Do I need to have my Certificates, Diplomas or Degrees verified by a JP before scanning and uploading?
Yes your qualification will have to be authentic , and will have to be checked for validity.
It would be strongly suggested that you do this prior to uploading to the online location when applying.
Failure to certify your qualification could delay your application .
JP means Justice of the Peace(New Zealand)
(Note: It is the facilitator how completes this exercise. If the certificates are not verified......then if appropriate the facilitator has the right ask for verification and or will seek personal vertification by phone to the appropriate issuing authorities.)
I do not speak English. Do I need to master that language or can I use an interpreter?
Currently the course is in English.
To be able to communicate your competency to the facilitators your command of the English language will have to be fair to good.
- However, the IABC will endeavour to match applicants with facilitators able to communicate in the same language. This service is not currently available but will be introduced in the near future.
- IABC will be looking at translation software which will make the possibility of multi lingual communication possible in the future.
IABC is aligned to Apec who are doing considerable work in the area of improving the competence of consultants working in areas where english is not the first language. In the first instance the IABC would seek to find a suitable interpreter but if justified would seek at appoint a suitable facilitator in your geographical region.
